The Metro is a tabloid newspaper, tabloid newspapers have many stereotypes attached to their House style. The Metro has some similarities to the classic tabloid style of newspaper. For example the Metro newspaper does have a quite bald layout on each of the pages using quite bald fonts such as the corbid typeface which make the text stick out from all the other pieces of text on the page of the newspaper, the text is also very easy to read for the audience. The newspaper also has many images which might create shock value. The langue used in the newspaper is also quite informal which makes it a comfortable read for the readers. They also include many short and small articles on many pages which can be read very fast by the readers. The paper also includes many images within the newspaper which keep the reader engaged in the newspaper while they are reading it. Keeping them reading the newspaper means they also see more adverts which makes the Metro the most money.
Their fonts which are used for on every page are bald and very easy to read for the reader while they are on the tube, at this it could be hard to read on the tube due to the constant movement but due to the bald and large text it makes it easy for the reader to read the newspaper even if there is a lot of movement on the tube. The titles are also straight to the point and make the readers want to find out more about the subjects which than makes them go through all the pages and look at the other articles and adverts attracting them.
The Metro uses three main colors Blue, white and read in the newspaper which are used on the Masthead and in other places of the newspaper such as adverts and articles and images. These three colors also represent the British Flag showing us that the newspaper is patriarchal and respects its nation and the people. There are also puns which are used within the titles as well as the text.
With the newspaper being free having adverts within the paper is the only way Metro could make profit from their paper. Due to this 40%+ of the content within the newspaper is filled with adverts. This allows the Metro to gain a significant profit, allowing them to release their content on a daily basis, while keeping the company financially stable. The products which are advertised within the newspaper usually relate to the content within the newspaper. There are also adverts for companies such as McDonald and KFC which do not relate to any content within the newspaper. There are also brands such as Waitrose which are within the paper for the middle class and upper middle class audience who are willing to pay the price for the products within Waitrose, also there are adverts for financial companies which relate to the audience who are young and may need some money to get their professional life started. There are also Furniture adverts which are targeted at the younger audience of the newspaper who might be living within a flat or a house looking for furniture for their place of stay.
The copy of metro which we are studying is a special matchzone editions, due to this the newspaper is filled with majority sport and football news which is sponsored by lad-brooks. Due to the Lad-brooks sponsor there is a minimum of 3 Lad-brooks adverts within the newspaper taking up whole 2 pages of the newspaper. There is also a section of the newspaper called the weekend which has articles speaking upon the different events which will happen during the weekend, there are also adverts for the different events and concerts that the audience of the newspaper might be interested in seeing.
For example this is a vodefone advert from the newspaper. It’s a really simple advert which is easy to understand, as soon as the audience see it they know they can get more data for a smaller price than normally. This advert also fits in with the house style as it’s a red advert fitting in with the colors of the metro newspaper. The ad also takes up a large amount of the space on the page, due to this we know that the company paid a large amount of money to fill in such a large amount of newspaper. The font on the advert is also clear to read and quite bald matching all the other text that is used within the newspaper.

The whole process starts at the Northcliffe house which is where all the editing of the the newspaper is done. The editors go over the newspapers and the Editor heads need to go over the final copy of the newspaper making sure that everything is in the right place, also checking the spelling and for any errors and improvements before the paper is sent out to print. In the Northcliffe house all the advertising is done, the advertising teams need to contact different business asking seeing if they want an advert to be placed in the next paper. They also have to go over the paper and choose where all the adverts could be placed within the newspaper making sure that there isn’t any free space that is being wasted.
Printing
The information is than sent out to the Hormsworth Printing Plant in Essex at around 10:30pm. They than get ready to print the newspaper making sure to check all the pages and making sure that everything is alright. The prints for the newspaper are than laser cut into metal which will than be used to put over the paper, printing out the text on the metal. Each press creates a whole newspaper, every second there are 20 newspapers made per each press. After the papers are printed they are automatically placed into blocks of newspaper, which is done to organize the papers, which are than zip tied into those blocks making sure they don’t fall apart while in the truck. After being organized the blocks of papers are than placed into trucks which transport them to the distribution centers.
Distribution
The trucks then deliver the papers to all the different wholesalers which than put the papers in their place ready for the opening of the shop. The newspapers are also delivered to smaller stores which than have paperboys who will deliver the papers to people who have a subscription with the paper. The stores are than ready to open and people are free to buy them and read until another comes out the next day going through the same long process. The Daily mail reaches 50,000 retailers as well as 82 wholesalers, making 2.4 million newspapers per day. These newspapers are delivered throughout the country due to this 165,000 miles are driven each day to deliver these newspapers.
Regulations are sets of codes which the industry is set to follow when creating their products. We need these press regulations to control the different stories that the news publishes for the public to see, as we must consider the different kinds of people in society. For example if there was too much regulations the news would be quite boring and people would lost interest in the news, it might also censor the newspaper, preventing them from having freedom of speech. On the other hand if there was no regulations, the journalists would be able to lie in their newspaper and this could be done for the shock value of the audience, to get more readers. It could also effect the peoples opinions using false information which is very wrong. It could also effect the views of young people on the world or certain groups of people having a permanent effect. There are two types of regulations, the first is statuary regulation, which is when a government organization checks up on the company making sure they are following all the laws and regulations. The second type of regulation is self regulation, this is when the business sets up their own regulator making sure they follow all the laws and regulations. There was an incident of a phone hacking scandal, this was a series of cases of phones of high profile people being hacked, the phones were used to get all types of interesting news, they did this using voicemail pins listening to the different messages on the phones. They used the information from these hacks in their own paper, for their own gain.
Due to the phone hacking scandal there was an inquiry launched, the Leveson inquiry, this was a public inquiry which was launched to find out what happened in the phone hacking scandals. They would also need to decide what would happen after this scandal and how the regulations should be changed and adjusted to make sure that this type of stuff does not happen again within the press community. The report also said that the action of the press caused serious harm to some people. The report also said that the press should be self regulated but there should be a watchdog within the companies that checks and makes sure that the regulator is doing their jobs and making sure the company is following the laws and regulations. There are now two current press regulators within the UK, they are IPSO and Impress, they do not follow this rule and there is not watchdog looking over the regulators within the company.
IPSO stands for Independent Press Standards Organisation. The institution is an independent regulator for newspapers and magazines, it is located in the UK. Their job is to monitor the different newspapers and magazines making sure they are held in account for any of their actions, also they protect the individual rights as well as allowing freedom of expression for the press. IPSO was launched during 2014. Some of the newspapers that IPSO regulated are the daily mail newspaper, daily star Sunday, the business Sheffield, The mail on Sunday and many more other newspapers and magazines which are regulated by them.
The IPSO replaced the PCC after the phone hacking scandal which showed us us that the regulators were not doing their jobs and they were not monitoring the actions of the newspapers and magazines. This meant that a new regulator was needed for the newspapers and magazines, that’s where IPSO came in as a new company which will monitor and regulate the newspapers and magazines from now on. They also provide advice for journalists and editors so they are able to than be able to uphold their highest possible standards.
IPSO also has its own editors code of practice which sets out the rules for the magazine and the newspapers which they need to follow. Some of the rules within the editors code of practice is accuracy. IPSO expect their newspapers and magazines to make sure that the information that they are publishing is accurate and non of the information is inaccurate, as well as images and different claims have to be backed by text which is legitimate. The paper should also make it clear at times if they are claiming something to be a fact or a comment as there is a significant difference between the two and it could also have an impact on the reader. The editors are also made to respect the privacy of the people they are reporting about and if they do have some information about the private life of the person, they would need to justify gaining this information. They are also not allowed to photograph individuals without their consent as they are expected to respect their public life.
A women going by the name Marina Ivleva complaint to the metro about an article that was written about her and her husband. She complaint claiming that the metro newspaper went against the regulations of accuracy, privacy, clandestine devices and subterfuge as well as discrimination. She claimed that the paper went against the regulations of accuracy by describing her as Ukrainian, also saying she has £300,000 worth of assets. She also claimed that they breached her privacy by publishing a photo of her which she described as private, saying that they must have hacked into her PC of phone, which also included the claim of clandestine devices and subterfuge. The other claims about discrimination were due to the newspaper describing her as Ukrainian, Marina said that she is actually Russian.
The complain way no accepted and claimed there was no breach. This was due to the women having three passports which were Ukrainian, British and Russian meaning the newspaper had the right of calling Marina Ukrainian due to her having the passport. The metro also claimed that they got the images of Ms Ivleva from her husband as well as the information about the value of her assets. Showing the IPSO that they did not breach the privacy, accuracy and the subterfuge regulations.
Second Complaint
The second complaint involved a men called Paul Armstrong complaint about an article that was written by the metro. He complaint about an article that was written about his niece who died of cancer. The article was titled, “Cancer victim Ellie, 14 was nice and happiest girl” he claimed that not all the information about her treatment was accurate. He also complaint about the article making them feel distressed, which also added to their problems of their daughter dying as well as their son falling ill not long before. He complaint because the information used in the interview was takes from the social media page of Ellie the dead 14 year old girl, not allowing the family to have privacy and grief in peace. They also did not consent to the story which made them feel distressed. The father of the girl also added saying he got a call from a journalist who was asking for information about the story, he claimed that he told the journalist to stop calling and he will not give any information about the case. He also says that the journalist called the workplace again, while speaking to the worker on the phone, asking for information about the death of the daughter, he claimed this to be harassment.
The complaint was not upheld, with the IPSO stating that there was no breach. This is because all the information that was used from the social media page of Ellie was public online, allowing anyone to access her page not making the information on the page private. The IPSO also stated that there is no need for the family to give consent to the newspaper for the story to be written and published. The article was also very sympathetic. The journalist also claimed that she was not told to not call again. With the dad claiming the newspaper published wrong info about the treatment of Ellie, the newspaper responded by saying that they found the information on a social media page of Ellie’s brother which claimed that she was going to abroad to be treated for her illness. The newspaper was willing to publish a public apology for the family about the article. They were also willing to send a private letter to Ellie’s parents apologizing about the article and the distress they caused to the family of the child.
Garden of Compassion
In my opinion both of these complaints that were made were well dealt with by IPSO, with one of the complaints being quite personal and controversial IPSO dealt with this issue very well as they didn’t get put under pressure and agree with the complaint just because it was quite emotional and personal, they stuck to their codes of conducts and their regulations rightfully disregarded the complain. Some may say that the journalists didnt have the right to use the social media of the dead girl, but they had the right to use it as her social media is public and anyone could access it, so it was maybe morally wrong of them to do that but they had every right to use the information found on her social media.
With the second case, it was just a case of a women who didn’t want information to be in the paper, the newspaper had every right to use the information they used in the newspaper and the women who did complain about the article was just looking to complain about the article in any way possible making the complain very petty.
